Scheduling AP firmware updates without taking the whole office Wi-Fi down at lunch.

Auto-update across all APs at once mid-day is how the worst incidents start. Never updating means known CVEs sit open after a year. A workable rhythm: quarterly cycle, wait a week on release notes, and never all APs at once.

Try this first

  1. 1Track the vendor update feed in your notes (UniFi releases, Aruba InstantOn release notes, TP-Link Omada changelog), check monthly.
  2. 2Wait 5 to 7 days after a major release before touching anything, by then other people's panic bugs are filed.
  3. 3Always update one AP first (a less critical one, in a quiet corner), wait 24 hours, then the rest.
  4. 4Schedule bulk updates outside office hours or during lunch and announce a short outage of 5 to 10 minutes per AP.
  5. 5Document firmware version per AP so when something goes wrong you can see which is still on the old build.
