Pay out and book tips correctly.
Cash tips go straight to staff, no accounting. Card tips flow via your account and are payroll-relevant: voluntary tips sit outside the VAT base (no supply to the guest), but depending on the collective agreement, payroll tax can apply. Check with your accountant.
Try this first
- 1Book card tips on a separate ledger account, not revenue.
- 2Distribute per agreement: by hour, shift, or equal share.
- 3Keep a log of who received what for later audit.
- 4Confirm with your accountant if it must run through payroll.
When to bring us in
On high volumes or collective-agreement questions, have the accountant confirm your tip structure.
