Can we use AI for legal text or medical advice?
AI models produce plausible-sounding text, but invent article numbers, case law and treatments. In legal and medical work a mistake is not 'oops' but a potential liability claim or patient harm. Use AI as help, never as the source of truth.
Try this first
- 1Use AI for structure and draft: a first cut of a contract clause, a patient letter summary, a rephrased complaint. Not for 'what does the law say' or 'what is the right treatment'.
- 2Verify every reference: article, section and case-law numbers always check against the official source. AI swaps numbers silently and consistently.
- 3Use tools that work over your own document base (RAG) instead of the general model. A verified library of case law or guidelines stops the model from citing freehand.
- 4Agree one qualified colleague signs off the output. Whoever signs carries responsibility, not the AI tool.
- 5Keep a log per case or patient stating which tool and version was used. On a claim, reproducibility matters.
