Scan to network folder returns 'access denied'

Almost always: the scanner uses a service account that lacks write rights, or the password expired.

Try this first

  1. 1Ask IT which account the scanner uses to write to the share.
  2. 2Test whether you can write to the folder with that account (Ctrl+Shift+right-click on Explorer > 'Run as different user').
  3. 3Can't write? Folder permissions issue. Can write? The password on the scanner has expired.
  4. 4On Windows shares: SMBv1 is off on modern servers. Old scanners need SMBv2/v3; some models cannot and need a relay share.

When to bring us in

Scan-to-share is a recurring chore on every server rollout. We set up a service account with the right permissions and SMB settings. One-time fix, years of peace.
