Caller ID looks like a known organisation but feels off, how to spot a spoof.
CLI spoofing is technically easy: the caller can send any number as the source. You cannot verify identity by phone, only by calling back on a verified number.
Try this first
- 1Do not trust CLI as identity proof, even if it looks like 'the bank'.
- 2On sensitive calls: note the number, hang up, call back via the official website number.
- 3Train staff: never release data based purely on CLI trust.
- 4Add an IVR notice on sensitive menus: 'we never ask for your login by phone'.
When to bring us in
Pattern of spoofed calls posing as management or bank: targeted training and an internal callback procedure before any payment is released.
