Separate VLAN for VoIP phones, why and how?

VoIP on its own VLAN separates voice from laptop burst traffic and makes QoS and troubleshooting cleaner. Switches and phones negotiate the correct VLAN via LLDP-MED or CDP.

Try this first

  1. 1Create a voice VLAN on the switch with its own subnet.
  2. 2Enable LLDP-MED on the switch, phones pick up the voice VLAN automatically.
  3. 3Daisy-chain laptop behind phone works: phone on voice VLAN, laptop on data VLAN via PC port.
  4. 4DHCP scope per VLAN with option 66 / option 160 for PBX provisioning.

When to bring us in

Unmanaged switch between phone and wall jack: VLAN tagging will not work, replace with a managed switch or PoE injector on the right VLAN.
