We want chat alongside Teams: Slack or Mattermost?
Slack is the SaaS default; Mattermost is self-host or cloud open-source. The choice depends on data residency, cost, and integrations.
Try this first
- 1Slack Free: message history limited to a recent period, few integrations. Not suitable for long-term business use.
- 2Slack Pro or Business+: paid per user per month, full history and full features.
- 3Mattermost Cloud: similar to Slack but hostable in EU; slightly less mature integrations.
- 4Mattermost self-hosted: free, but you run the infra (server, backups, updates). Fits orgs that want data fully in-house.
- 5First check whether you actually need a second chat tool besides Teams; often it is a symptom of poorly configured Teams.

Choice affecting all communication: ask for advice; switching pain on an entrenched chat tool is underestimated.
