Search in Explorer returns nothing or wrong things
The Search index is corrupt or out of date. Search runs against a stale or empty list.
Try this first
- 1Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows > 'Rebuild' or 'Advanced indexing options' > 'Rebuild'.
- 2Indexing takes hours. Meanwhile: use the modern File Explorer search bar; it queries the file system directly, not just the index.
- 3Limit indexed locations to what you actually search. Indexing a whole 1 TB drive is usually overkill.
- 4A third-party tool like Everything (free) is absurdly fast for file search and reads the Master File Table directly. Recommended for power users.
