My Teams chat history is empty after a restart

Usually the Teams cache is broken; messages live in the cloud and return once the cache rebuilds.

Try this first

  1. 1Quit Teams fully; right-click the system tray icon and pick 'Quit', do not just close the window.
  2. 2Open File Explorer and paste %appdata%\Microsoft\Teams (classic Teams) or %localappdata%\Packages\MSTeams_8wekyb3d8bbwe (new Teams) into the address bar.
  3. 3Rename the folder to something like 'Teams-old' instead of deleting it, just in case.
  4. 4Restart Teams and sign in. The cache rebuilds and chats reload (a few minutes is normal).

When to bring us in

If chats stay empty after a fresh cache, or only desktop is missing them while web is fine, we should look at the tenant.
