Zero trust sounds expensive, is it worth it for an SMB?

Zero trust is not a product but a principle: do not trust any device, user or location by default. For SMBs you can get 80 percent there using M365 building blocks you often already have.

Try this first

  1. 1Start with MFA for everyone, conditional access on sensitive apps, and device compliance via Intune.
  2. 2Add network segmentation and VPN replacement only when you genuinely need location-independent work.
  3. 3Avoid expensive all-in-one zero trust platforms until you have the basics, otherwise you buy things that overlap with M365.
  4. 4The biggest win is not tooling but policy: who gets access where and how you verify it.
