What does a NAS for a 10-person team with backup cost

Unit + disks + backup strategy + UPS. A NAS without backup around it is a single point of failure, not a solution.

Try this first

  1. 1Unit: a Synology or QNAP for 4 to 6 disks runs between 600 and 1500 euros in 2026 depending on CPU, RAM, and bays. For ten users in a fileserver role a 4-bay is often enough.
  2. 2Disks: NAS drives (WD Red, Seagate IronWolf) are 80 to 200 euros each by capacity. Plan 4 plus 1 spare. Minimum 3 for RAID 5, 4 for SHR-2 (in practice for SMB data you plan more generously, not on the minimum).
  3. 3UPS: a NAS without UPS is a NAS that corrupts during a power blip. Between 100 and 300 euros for a decent APC or CyberPower.
  4. 4Off-site backup: the NAS sits in your office. Fire or burglary ends it. Synology Hyper Backup to C2, a second NAS at someone home, or a cloud backup. Not optional.
  5. 5Maintenance: firmware updates, RAID monitoring, and a yearly restore test. Budget an hour or two per quarter if you DIY, or fold into a retainer.
