Backup tool shows dedup ratio 8:1, is that good?
Dedup cuts storage for VMs and repetitive data. 5:1 is normal, 10:1+ either very homogeneous data or suspect.
Try this first
- 1Read the ratio in the tool (Veeam, Acronis, Synology)
- 2Compare with similar environments
- 3On sudden drop: check if a large dataset was added
- 4Plan capacity based on trend, not one reading
When to bring us in
Below 2:1 on a VM environment (dedup is not working)
