When do we need Microsoft Purview with AI?

Purview for classification and DLP is overkill for most, but essential if you are in a regulated sector with Copilot.

Try this first

  1. 1First ask: do we need sensitivity labels to keep data away from Copilot? Under 50 people, a folder strategy is often enough.
  2. 2Worth it: regulated sectors (health, finance, law), certifications (ISO 27001, NEN 7510), and 100+ people where eyeball oversight breaks down.
  3. 3License requirements: Purview components sit in pricier E5/Compliance add-ons. Run the math against audit savings.
  4. 4Start with labels on a small slice (HR library, customer ledger). Mass labeling at kickoff fails more often than people admit.
  5. 5With Copilot: labels marked 'highly confidential' can be excluded from Copilot grounding. That is the killer feature for regulated tenants.

When to bring us in

Compliance audit or customer ask specifically about data labeling and Copilot: that is an implementation project, not a switch. We do those.
