Reading receipts automatically with AI, does it actually work?
For clean PDF invoices yes, for crumpled paper receipts it varies. The review step stays needed.
Try this first
- 1PDF invoices: works surprisingly well for vendor, date, amounts, VAT. Bookkeeping tools like Yuki, Moneybird, Exact have this built in; building your own OCR pipeline is usually overkill.
- 2Phone photos of receipts: varies with light, creases, faded thermal paper. A second human check on the total saves mistakes.
- 3Confidentiality: invoice data is business-sensitive. Use a tool with a DPA, not 'photo in ChatGPT' as a routine.
- 4For custom integration: modern vision LLMs (current frontier models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google) do vision OCR decently, structured output (JSON) needs a prompt pattern. Expect iterations.
- 5Do not build what your bookkeeper already has. Ask your accountant first what automation they use.
