Windows update hangs or "does not finish"
Sometimes an update sits at 95% for an hour. Often it is still working; sometimes it is really stuck. Patience first, then action.
Try this first
- 1Give it another 60 minutes if it is on a specific percentage. Some updates reboot multiple times and look stuck.
- 2Hard reboot by holding the power button. If Windows is truly stuck, three failed boots trigger Repair mode.
- 3In Repair mode: Advanced options > Uninstall updates; rolls back the last update so you can retry.
- 4For repeated failures: Settings > Windows Update > Troubleshoot. Microsoft's built-in tool fixes many common cases automatically.
When to bring us in
For laptops that consistently trip on updates, the disk or Windows profile is likely corrupted. We run diagnostics and, if needed, a clean Windows reinstall preserving files.
