PDF will not open
Often the file is fine; the default app is missing or got hijacked by another install.
Try this first
- 1Right-click the PDF > "Open with" > pick another reader (Edge, Chrome, Adobe Acrobat). If another program opens it, the file is OK.
- 2Reset default app: Settings > Apps > Default apps > search ".pdf" > pick your desired reader again.
- 3Corrupted file? Drag the PDF onto Chrome or Edge. Browsers tend to render PDFs other readers reject.
- 4If all PDFs have failed since a specific date, the Adobe Reader/Acrobat install is broken. Uninstall and reinstall from the Adobe site (not the Microsoft Store).
When to bring us in
If no app opens the file, the PDF may be truly corrupt. Ask the sender to re-export; much faster than running a PDF recovery tool.
