Defender real-time scan pushes my IO constantly high
Build folders, dev tools and archive extractions trigger repeated scans. A few targeted exclusions take most of the load away.
Try this first
- 1Inspect current exclusions with Get-MpPreference
- 2Add dev folders, node_modules and VM disks to ExclusionPath
- 3Exclude specific processes like docker.exe and python.exe where it makes sense
- 4Keep ASR rules on, exclude scanning only, not the protection
When to bring us in
For large build servers: use Performance Analyzer for Defender to identify hotspots.

- Opening files from the file server takes minutesOften the server itself is fine and the issue is network routing or stalling DNS resolution.
