What does IT-offboarding a leaving employee cost
Lower than onboarding but not zero. Skipped offboarding costs the most later, because licences keep running and data lingers without an owner.
Try this first
- 1Stop or reassign licences. Each forgotten licence keeps billing monthly until someone cancels. Budget a few tens of euros wasted per missed seat per month.
- 2Mailbox conversion. Converting a leaver mailbox to shared costs no licence. Keeping it active does cost a licence. Standard task, often forgotten.
- 3Collect or resell hardware. Budget an hour of logistics plus a wipe. Reselling refurbished generates some return but also time.
- 4Revoke access cleanly. Disable AD, unlink MFA tokens, revoke password manager access, recover any hardware key. Do not forget external SaaS where they logged in via SSO.
- 5Documentation and handover. What is in their OneDrive, which passwords in their vault, which shared inboxes did they follow. Not IT work, but someone has to do it before the chair is empty.
