Running my own mail server, is that not much cheaper than M365 or Google?
On license cost it looks cheaper, but deliverability, anti-spam, management and uptime concerns make it almost never cheaper in practice, almost always more expensive and more risky.
Try this first
- 1Plan time for anti-spam, blocklist monitoring and keeping SPF, DKIM and DMARC clean continuously.
- 2Plan a second server or fallback for uptime, otherwise you lose mail the moment the box hiccups.
- 3Count management hours for patches, security and monitoring, even if you do it yourself, that is opportunity cost.
- 4Compare that to an M365 or Google Workspace subscription per user per month, those few euros buy you stability.
