Running my own mail server, is that not much cheaper than M365 or Google?

On license cost it looks cheaper, but deliverability, anti-spam, management and uptime concerns make it almost never cheaper in practice, almost always more expensive and more risky.

Try this first

  1. 1Plan time for anti-spam, blocklist monitoring and keeping SPF, DKIM and DMARC clean continuously.
  2. 2Plan a second server or fallback for uptime, otherwise you lose mail the moment the box hiccups.
  3. 3Count management hours for patches, security and monitoring, even if you do it yourself, that is opportunity cost.
  4. 4Compare that to an M365 or Google Workspace subscription per user per month, those few euros buy you stability.
