What is a normal day rate for custom development in NL

Rates vary between freelance, small agencies, and large. The real difference is rarely the rate, more often the hours.

Try this first

  1. 1Get three quotes for exactly the same scope. Look at hours estimated and approach, not just rate. 80 hours at a lower rate beats 40 hours at a higher rate in cost.
  2. 2Understand the tiers: freelance dev, small agency 5 to 15, mid-tier 30 to 100, large. Rates step up per tier. For SMB work freelance or small agency usually fits better.
  3. 3Ask whether the rate includes project management, code review, and testing. Sometimes yes, sometimes a PM or tester invoices separately. Avoid surprise lines.
  4. 4Budget a 15 to 30% unexpected-cost margin. No project goes exactly to plan. Add that hedge before approving.
  5. 5Choose fixed price vs T&M depending on scope clarity. For "build exactly this button" fixed price works. For "build a tool that might help our workflow" T&M with a budget cap fits.
