Which mic for a podcast or business webinar, not the headset mic?

For publishing you want a dedicated USB or XLR microphone. Headset mics sound boxy when you replay them later. For SMBs a USB condenser or dynamic in a quiet room is enough.

Try this first

  1. 1Solo podcasts and webinars: Shure MV7 or MV7+ (USB and XLR), Rode PodMic USB, or Audio-Technica AT2020USB+. All plug-and-play on Mac and Windows, 150 to 300 euro per unit.
  2. 2For 2 to 4 speakers in the same room: Rodecaster Pro II or Zoom Podtrak P4 as the interface, with 2 to 4 dynamic XLR mics such as Shure SM58, Rode PodMic or Shure SM7B. Dynamic over condenser, because it picks up less room reverb and typing.
  3. 3Position the mic 10 to 20 cm from the mouth, with a pop filter and a boom arm. The boom arm kills desk vibration, which is the audible gap between 'amateur' and 'professional'.
  4. 4Treat the room. An empty meeting room with glass walls always sounds hollow. Curtains, a rug, and acoustic panels behind the mic position do more than a microphone 200 euro pricier.
  5. 5Test with OBS, Riverside, Descript or your webinar platform (Teams Live Events, Restream, StreamYard) before you go live. Set mic gain manually, do not let the software auto-gain take over.
