What do I do with laptops leaving service?
Three routes: wipe and reuse, donate, or via a recycler. Critical part: data must truly be gone before the device leaves the building.
Try this first
- 1First remove the laptop from Microsoft 365/Intune and any MDM. Cleans your tenant.
- 2Wipe: turn off BitLocker, then reinstall Windows clean with 'remove everything > clean the drive'. Enough on SSDs.
- 3Donating to a school or staff member: clean install plus a new local account, no restore from your corporate image.
- 4Recycler: pick a certified party that issues a certificate of erasure. Store it with your GDPR records.

- Should we buy or lease laptops as a 5-person company? Both work. Lease is predictable but pricier over the term; buying needs cash and your own depreciation. The difference is mostly admin.
- Is buying refurbished smart or asking for trouble? For office work fine, if from a serious vendor with warranty and a clean OS install. The trap is shady marketplace listings.
