Can I reset a laptop without reinstalling Windows from scratch?
Yes, Windows has a 'Reset this PC' option that wipes everything and re-lays the OS. Good enough to hand to a new colleague.
Try this first
- 1Settings > System > Recovery > Reset this PC > Remove everything > Cloud download (fresh Windows) or Local reinstall.
- 2Under Remove everything also pick 'Clean the data'. Overwrites; slower but safer for hand-off.
- 3After the reset: detach from Microsoft 365 before the new colleague gets it. Otherwise they inherit the old tenant binding.
- 4Tricky cases (corrupt recovery partition): make a Windows USB and do a clean install. Not much longer and a cleaner result.
