Can I run a confidential document through DeepL?

DeepL Free ships text to DeepL's cloud. For business confidentiality you need DeepL Pro or a local option.

Try this first

  1. 1DeepL Free: keeps input for product improvement. Not for contracts, customer data, or confidential documents.
  2. 2DeepL Pro: does not retain text, has a DPA. Minimum bar for business use.
  3. 3Google Translate API in Google Workspace: similar story, business tier and DPA, personal Google has a different policy.
  4. 4For strictly confidential text: local translation models (Translate Locally or a self-hosted model on Azure/AWS with EU residency). More setup though.
  5. 5If random sentences drift through random tools, set one tool as the default. Otherwise you lose track of what went where.

When to bring us in

A draft contract went through DeepL Free and the customer asks whether that was safe: call us, do not downplay in mail.
