The server is occasionally slow, I see no pattern

Without a baseline you cannot tell if a spike is normal. A minimal Zabbix or Netdata makes patterns visible over hours and days.

Try this first

  1. 1Install the Zabbix agent or Netdata on the host, takes minutes
  2. 2Collect CPU, memory, IO and network per minute for two weeks
  3. 3Plot business-day peaks against batch jobs and backup windows
  4. 4Alert on deviations from baseline, not absolute thresholds

When to bring us in

For an SMB with more than five servers: a central Prometheus and Grafana stack pays back quickly.
