The server is occasionally slow, I see no pattern
Without a baseline you cannot tell if a spike is normal. A minimal Zabbix or Netdata makes patterns visible over hours and days.
Try this first
- 1Install the Zabbix agent or Netdata on the host, takes minutes
- 2Collect CPU, memory, IO and network per minute for two weeks
- 3Plot business-day peaks against batch jobs and backup windows
- 4Alert on deviations from baseline, not absolute thresholds
When to bring us in
For an SMB with more than five servers: a central Prometheus and Grafana stack pays back quickly.

- One specific application is slow for everyoneIf an app is slow for one person: local. For everyone at once: server side or vendor side.
- Opening files from the file server takes minutesOften the server itself is fine and the issue is network routing or stalling DNS resolution.
