Between 10:00 and 12:00 my workstation becomes unusable, disk constantly at 100 percent. The backup agent is running then.

Endpoint backup agents (Veeam Agent, Acronis, Synology Active Backup) do full file scans. During work hours that's untenable. Schedule, throttle and VSS save most workloads.

Try this first

  1. 1Open the agent and check when the job runs. Move it outside hours (after 19:00 or overnight). If the laptop is off then: enable wake-on-LAN or a wake policy, or 'run on next available time'.
  2. 2Enable CPU and disk throttling. Most agents have a 'low-priority IO' option or a bandwidth cap for backup. Half-throttle doesn't halve duration, but it makes the workday workable.
  3. 3For file-based backup with VSS: ensure Volume Shadow Copy Service is on (services.msc). The agent then snapshots and reads from there, not live files. Far fewer lock conflicts.
  4. 4Exclude large dynamic folders backed up elsewhere: %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Outlook (OST file), browser caches, OneDrive mirror. Gigabytes mutating every night with no value.
  5. 5Monitor what the agent reads with Resource Monitor. An agent scanning 200 GB per hour while 5 GB is new is misconfigured. Incremental should be relatively small.
  6. 6For shared fileservers: ask if share backup runs server-side, not through the client agent. That's what it's built for and the user isn't affected.

When to bring us in

If impact stays unworkable after schedule and throttle, the agent isn't right for this workstation type. Discuss with the IT partner whether another product (image-based VSS snapshot, cloud back-end) fits better.
