Which laptop for a freelancer under a thousand euro?

Under a thousand euro is doable in 2026 for business work if you do not skimp on the three things you feel daily: screen, keyboard, battery. Specs at that price land around Ryzen 5 or Core i5, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD.

Try this first

  1. 1Minimums: 16GB RAM (not 8), 512GB SSD (not 256), Full HD or better, business line (HP ProBook, Dell Latitude/Inspiron Pro, Lenovo ThinkPad E-series). Consumer lines cut hinges and warranty.
  2. 2Avoid under 1k: 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, eMMC storage, plastic hinges, 720p screen, no Windows Pro. Pro is needed for BitLocker and domain join.
  3. 3ARM (Snapdragon X) versus Intel/AMD: ARM is thinner and quieter with better battery, but some business apps still run poorly (specific VPN clients, older accounting tools). Check your tool list first.
  4. 4Refurbished business line as alternative: a ThinkPad T-series 1-2 years old under 1k is often higher quality than new consumer kit. Look for 24-month commercial warranty via a refurb vendor, not 6-month consumer.
