How do we redirect Documents to OneDrive cleanly?
OneDrive Known Folder Move (KFM) moves Desktop, Documents and Pictures to OneDrive without user action. Plan well to avoid double copies and sync storms.
Try this first
- 1Prerequisite: OneDrive sync client deployed via Intune or GPO, with silent account configuration and the correct Tenant ID.
- 2Enable KFM via the 'Silently move Windows known folders to OneDrive' GPO. Block the 'Stop protecting' option by enabling 'Prevent users from redirecting their Windows known folders to their PC'.
- 3Test on a few representative accounts. Watch out for large OST or PST files, those do not belong in OneDrive.
- 4Communicate to users: after sync, Documents and Desktop now live in OneDrive, available offline via Files On-Demand.
- 5Monitor OneDrive storage quotas: 1 TB per user by default, but expect a spike on first sync, especially for users with large local data.
When to bring us in
Large PST or media files in user folders: clean up before migrating. A 30 GB PST in OneDrive is a sync nightmare.
