Can I install workplace CCTV?

Yes, with legitimate interest, transparency, no hidden recording, and strict minimum. The AP enforces here and steps in if the balance tilts against employees.

Try this first

  1. 1Document the purpose. Theft prevention, safety around cash or stock, first-aid response. "Monitoring employees" in general is a red line.
  2. 2Run a DPIA. Workplace CCTV is on the AP DPIA list.
  3. 3Inform employees. Written in the handbook or policy, plus visible signs at entrances. Hidden recording is only allowed under strict conditions, short term, for a concrete incident.
  4. 4Cap retention. AP guidance defaults to a maximum of 4 weeks, longer only with a concrete incident.
  5. 5Check works council (OR). CCTV often needs OR consent under the WOR.
